April 20th has become widely recognized as a day to celebrate all things cannabis, including CBD (with great CBD sales!). There are several versions of the origin story of 4/20, but it seems likely that it started in 1971 with a group of pot-smoking California high school kids.

The beginnings

Now back to those high school kids. According to Larry “Ratso” Sloman, author of Reefer Madness: A History of Marijuana, this group of friends would meet at 4:20 to smoke some weed after school. One of them had a brother who was friends with Phil Lesh, the Grateful Dead’s bassist. Eventually, the high school kids were smoking weed with the Dead, and their 4/20 catch phrase passed into counter culture usage.

For decades, the 4/20 message remained low key. Marijuana smokers used it as a sort of code, while most people were probably oblivious to its meaning. Gradually, however, it seeped into the consciousness of a wider audience and became a commonly recognized concept of marijuana usage.

Broadening the Base

From those early days of sneaking around to get high, 4/20 has expanded to become a broader, more benign cultural phenomenon. Today it is widely recognized by the general population and understood to represent a celebration of the cannabis plant and all that we use it for.

As more and more states legalize marijuana, it seems inevitable that federal legalization is not far off. Marijuana has come far from the days of kids sneaking joints and jazz musicians finding inspiration. Today it is not just for recreational use, although that is of course a common and mostly accepted use. Marijuana is also recognized for its reputed medicinal properties and is prescribed by medical professionals for pain relief and other uses.

Indeed, marijuana has come far from the days when the absurd film “Reefer Madness” was shown to school kids as anti-drug propaganda. The stigma that went along with cannabis was widespread and deeply ingrained. It took decades for people to gradually understand that this was an amazing plant with many useful properties.

Getting Down to Business

Anytime something catches the public imagination, you can bet that the business world will take notice and seek to become part of the trend. So it is with cannabis. From the sketchy head shops of the 1970s, commercial involvement in cannabis has developed to include family farmers, industrial growers, medical dispensaries, retail stores in legal states, and on and on.

The whole 4/20 phenomenon has become something of an observed holiday, and businesses love to ride the wave of popularity. The day is greeted by numerous sales and offers designed to catch the eye of the public and move product for the business making the offers.
