Grumpy Grandpa Hemp Flower, Indica (in our opinion), 16.5% CBD, <.1% THC (Delta 9)
Five Senses: 7.0
Curb Appeal: 7.5
Before we hopped into ordering CBD flower for reviews, we did our research into which strains people were raving about around the web and summarized 30+ hours of our findings here. We only mention that to say that Fields of Hemp popped up literally everywhere. Best strain for sleep? Grumpy Grandpa. One of the best relaxing strains? Grumpy Grandpa. Are you grumpy? Grumpy Grandpa. (haha) Naturally, an order from Fields of Hemp needed to happen. The website isn't quite as whiz-bang as others in the space, but hey, we're not smoking the website. Let's check out the flower.
The Five Senses (7.0 out of 10)
Grumpy Grandpa smells solid out of the gates. It's not as pungent as some, but a nice aroma of pine and sweetness wafted from the pouch. There is a freshness about the smell that is hard to pinpoint, but was pleasant. On the smoke front? We have to recommend a vaporizer for this one. Taking a hit of Grumpy Grandpa out of a bowl was a fairly harsh experience. Hemp isn't the smoothest by nature to begin with, so we can't fault Fields of Hemp too much Also, we just so happened to have our vaporizer handy. We wouldn't say the vaporizer completely mellowed it out, but it helped.
Curb Appeal (7.5 out of 10)
Our flower arrived in an unassuming black pouch affixed with the Fields of Hemp logo. The nuggets looked great - slightly compressed from shipping, but bursting with orange trichomes. Various shades of green abound with a nice frosty coating across the entirety of the hemp. From a looks standpoint, this flower is right on par with some of the best. Why a 7.5 rating then? Unfortunately, Grumpy Grandpa was one of the driest flowers we've tested. It could have been the last few pouches of an older batch or just a slightly-off cure. But, some of the harshness of the smoke is likely coming from the moisture content, in our opinion.
Potency (7.5 out of 10) -
Clocking in at 16.5% CBD content, this flower is squarely in the middle on the CBD potency spectrum. If you're looking for something with a little more kick than usual that won't cloud your mind, this it. Great overall potency level. On the THC front, the Fields of Hemp GG came in at <.1% delta-9. FOH isn't pushing the .3% limit, which ensures you're likely to stay lucid during and after your session. On the terpene front, this flower has 1.14% total terpenes, which again, is right there in the middle. As we look through the Certificate of Analysis (kudos to FOH for putting that front and center), we find that Grumpy Grandpa is almost equal parts alpha-pinene, myrcene and beta-caryophyllene with a kicker of nerolidol. It's clear to see, based on the terpene profile, where fans of Grumpy Grandpa found both chilling and sedative effects from this strain.
Effect (8.0 out of 10)
The hemp flower community didn't steer us wrong on effect. We anticipated a relaxing strain and that's what we got. After our first session, our reviewers felt a nice overall numbing sensation after 5-7 minutes. This is a "back cracker" for sure as your muscles relax. The body effect is definitely relaxing, but maybe not quite as sedative as we were lead to believe. That's probably a good thing so this isn't exclusively a bedtime stain. Mentally, we were still very clear throughout and after our session - almost no head effect. From that standpoint, Grumpy Grandpa reminded us of our review from Berkshire CBD's Remedy strain. This body effect is more potent than Berkshire Remedy in our opinion, but similar head effect.
Price (9.2 out of 10)
You can get Grumpy for $30 for an 1/8 oz, $45 for a 1/4 oz, $70 for 1/2 and $100 for an ounce on the Fields of Hemp website. this flower is priced at the lower-middle or lower end of the spectrum. For the effect of the flower relative to the price, that is an incredible deal. We've seen a few flowers cheaper at low volume, but as you increase the volume to an ounce, the price versus quality is a no brainer. This is a value at $100/oz. Based on the potency above, you'll be paying 5.2 cents per milligram of CBD when you buy an 1/8th, which is middle of the road pricing for CBD flower. The best news? If you buy an ounce, you cut that BY OVER HALF to 2.2 cents per milligram. Incredible value. As we've said before, we've seen some ounces go for $250! If you want good value for effect and a relaxing evening, check out Grumpy Grandpa from Fields of Hemp.
