The search is on for some way to stop the destructive march of the Coronavirus. As the virus spreads, markets tank, and whole cities are quarantined, people are rightfully afraid and looking for protection. With all the claims made for the benefits of CBD, some wonder if among these benefits might be antibiotic protection that will hold off the virus. Such a possibility exists, but here at we have not yet seen sufficient research that would confirm such protection.

CBD has become hugely popular due to the apparent health benefits claimed by users and, to some extent, clinical studies undertaken recently. It has been recognized as anti-inflammatory, pain reducing, and possibly neuroprotective. Could it be that a CBD regimen could provide anti-viral protection? At this time, such a claim could not be backed up with sufficient evidence.

Encouraging news has come from several preliminary studies. NIH research has shown that CBD affects viral replication and thus the ability to cause disease, and helps to selectively kill cells infected by a virus. A study at The University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience’s Centre for Superbug Solutions in Brisbane, Australia, where CBD was shown to be “remarkably effective” at killing bacteria in a test tube. However, the researchers caution, the results are very preliminary and require more study before a definitive claim can be made.

What might encourage the CBD user, along with the results of these studies, is the overall contribution to body health that may be gained from regular CBD use, keeping the body in a state of healthy equilibrium through interaction with one’s endocannabinoid system. Perhaps this equilibrium and overall healthy state will help provide a barrier to viral infections. I won’t go so far as to make that claim, but I will be diligent in my own CBD regimen, maintaining my overall health and possibly strengthening my body against viral attacks.
